We'll be having a Christmas hamper, full of lovely handmade goods from our stallholders. Tickets are free when you purchase from our stallholders. Just a little thankyou from all of us.

We have two fair trade stalls: Douglas with his amazing beadwork from Zimbabwe, handmade wooden toys from Kelti and April with her textiles from Daughters of Cambodia. Support these wonderful stallholders, knowing you're helping someone with your purchase.

I couldn't help myself, but who can resist a unique, handcrafted, exquisite pieces of jewellery?

We have some wonderful presents for the smaller people in your life, unfortunately, mine are both over 6ft tall!

Scarves are adorning us even as we head into summer. They provide a welcome decoration through the day and double up as useful when the evening gets a little cooler. We have lots of really gorgeous scarves for that summer evening.

We have lots of unusual presents as well, all handmade and with a story, just ask the maker!

And not to be forgotton, we even have something for mans best friend: biscotti.

And when your finished, there's even some lovely herbal teas.

If you're looking for that sweet little gift for those special people in your life, I had a look around at the last market and this is what I found. They're all around the $10 mark or under!

There are lots of gorgeous flowers: brooches, headbands, necklaces and silk pins. Strawberries. I'm after the gorgeous chutneys and jams. Earings, button bookmarks, handknit face washers and fridge magnets. For the little ones we have bibs and pencil cases (I love these so much, I have one!) There are lots of pampering sprays, soaps and candles. And to top it all of gorgeous hand made cards.

I've just added the photos as they came, I hope you enjoy them. It was fun looking carefully at the stalls and picking out that little something. If you can't find something as a gift for that special friend, teacher or...., then you're not looking!

One wet Saturday

Just wanted to thank all the people who came out on Saturday to our lovely market, on what was a very wet and dreary day. We were full to the brim, having moved some of our stallholders inside, out of the inclement weather. It's funny where you can find extra space!

Did you manage to snap up one the lovely magnets by Kristen, they're very addictive! I have some adorning my fridge. Was she busy!

Beautiful jewellery!

I always say you can't have too many books or jewellery and here at Ivanhoe we have some gorgeous jewellers, all who have been with us for awhile. So, in no particular order, we have:

Shirley Barker with her semi-precious stones. Her colours are always strong and vibrant. Just right for that statement piece.

James Estergard has some amazing sterling silver, and other metal jewellery, really strong design. I have a gorgeous titanium ring with a tiny bolt that I wear almost constantly, it fits with my casual lifestyle, most of his are fantastic statement pieces.

Kanella Tsirbis is our other metal jeweller and her delicate jewellery is wonderful. There are a couple of pieces that I would love to own and her earings are gorgeous.

Margaret Edwards has beautiful crytal and other beads in beautiful combinations. Just right to add a bit of sparkle to an outfit.

AND

Just for something different, Susie Tschirsch has wonderful fabric japanese jewellery. Amazing to see and a great present for that sister of mine!

As you can see we have a wonderful array of jewellers. I love them all! Come along this Saturday and see if you can find some special presents for that someone special. Hope to see you there!

A great day at the Livingstone Community Centre

As we start to prepare ourselves for the next market on the 17th, I thought we could reflect on the lovely day we had for our first market in the Livingstone Community Centre.

It's quite a different space with various rooms to explore and lovely light through the large windows. We're now able to have stalls outside, adding to how the market looks and feels.

It was a busy day, and we welcomed many new faces and many of our friends.

We are all excited about our move to the Livingstone Community Centre. Saturday the 20th will be our first day there. We'll be back to our usual time of 10am till 4pm and we'll have a full house!

It's quite a different venue with a number of spaces. There's the main hall..

There's the meditation room.

There's a wonderful outdoor area, where there'll be stalls as well. This is a child safe area with a small playground.

There are other spaces, too. There'll be a sausage sizzle and music. We're right on the corner of Livingstone St. and Waterdale rd., so come and say hello and see our gorgeous new space.

Farewell to the Banyule Arts Space

Today was the last market to be held at the Banyule Arts Space. Despite being a very chilly July day, a lovely day was had by stallholders and visitors.

The market has been held at the Banyule Arts Space for nearly four years, in fact, next month will be our fourth birthday! It's a lovely indoor venue and this month we were full with lots of, both, familiar and new faces.

The Livingsong Choir

This gorgeous choir has been at our market on previous occasions and are just lovely to listen to.

Fair trade stalls

One of the benefits of our collaboration with Livingstone Community Centre has been the addition of Fair Trade stalls to our market. This has been an exciting development with the view to expanding the range of stalls.

So far we've welcomed:

DAUGHTERS COLLECTION. Daughters of Cambodia NGO was established in 2007 by Ruth Elliott, in response to the horrifying reality of girls being sold into the sex industry. Daughters provides employment in fair-trade business and a range of support services.

Daughters Collection includes kitchen linen, table linen, cushions, bags, jewellery, hats, scarves, purses and other fashion accessories, made with locally sourced eco-friendly materials including handwoven cotton, dyed naturally using forest fruits. The collections is sold by volunteers, all profits are reinvested in the work of the organisation in Cambodia.

CARPETS FOR COMMUNITIES. Carpets are made in Cambodia from recycled T-Shirt material and rice sacks. All proceeds from these rugs go back to Cambodia to help mothers break the cycle of poverty for their children.

Hi everyone,

Just a quick hello to all the market stallholders and update from the Livingstone Community Centre (LCC). I hope you all are well and gearing up for our two Christmas Markets.

Some of you may have seen an article in the Leader Newspaper which had a great photo of Shirley and Lena. Unfortunately they said the market was being held here at the Livingstone Community Centre which is not the case. The market will still be held at the Banyule Arts Space. Hopefully we will see a correction in the "What's On" column this week.
Please let me know your plans re the Dec 18th and Feb 19th markets as soon as possible.

The December Market will showcase our choir Phoenix Singers over the lunch period - time to be confirmed - and hopefully we will have a special appearance from Santa Claus at the Market and down the main street.

A little bit about Me!

Several years ago I discovered I am sensitive to the rays from the sun when they hit my skin. This discovery got me thinking hard about some of the everyday products I put on my skin through washing and moisturising. These items were meant to be positive and therapeutic and yet they all contained chemicals! I knew this had to change and that’s where my journey began.

Having studied the benefits and researching into oil use and natural products, I began creating my own. At first just for myself and my family, to then being able to offer these goodies to others such as you – to help benefit the mind, body and spirit! I try my best to keep my products affordable for everyday use through low overheads and simple packaging – I will not compromise on quality!

A little note:

I believe in holistically helping to heal the Earth and those living on it by (where possible) using recyclable packaging and sustainable materials.

Hello to all Ivanhoe Makers Market stallholders and supporters.
My name is Susan and I am the Coordinator of the Livingstone Community Centre (LCC). I look forward to meeting some of you and reading your blogs.

The LCC is very happy and excited to be taking over the administration of the market from the Banyule City Council.

LCC is a registered Neighbourhood House in Banyule and is also a ministry of the Ivanhoe Baptist Church.
The Centre is a place for friendship, learning and belonging and seeks to strengthen community in a safe and positive environment and to nurture the social, intellectual, emotional, physical and spiritual well-being of all who participate.
Please come along and visit and support the Market as much as possible and please be patient whilst we make this important transition!

Celebrating three years and a new Beginning

As many of you would know our future has been a bit hazy. However, it is with great pleasure and relief that we can announce that the Livingstone Community Centre has agreed to take over the management of our wonderful little market.

So this month we will be celebrating our 3rd birthday and looking forward to the future. Come and say hello to all our stallholders.

We hope you all had a lovely relaxing Summer and are ready to see what our lovely makers have been doing. Our first market for the year is on Saturday (the 20th) from 10am till 4pm.

This year will be an exciting year as we move, with the very supportive help from Banyule City Council, to a self-managed market.

Last year we farewelled our Co-ordinator, Cindy Smith, wishing her well for her future. This year we welcome Clare Carmody, who is the Art and Cultural Development Officer for the Council and part of her role is to help us make this transition. She will be at the market, on Saturday, so come and say hello!

For one day only, the Ivanhoe Makers Market will be zooming to new spot!

On Saturday November 21st you'll find us in the courtyard of nearby Yarra Plenty Regional Library, at 255 Heidelberg Road Ivanhoe. Only 50 metres from our home, the library has plenty of parking for cars, bikes and prams. This is just a temporary location, we'll be back at Banyule Art Space in December.

Under the shady gumtrees you'll find a cornuccopia of goodies, including handmade chocolates, biscuits, jewellery, textiles, ceramics, and so much more.

Ivanhoe Makers Market is Melbourne's finest artisan market. Buying directly from the maker means you get to know about the product, how and why it was made, and most importantly, how much talent there is in Melbourne's northern suburbs!

Artopia Glassworks

Gill Peterson of Artopia Glassworks makes handmade glassware; shaken, slumped, stirred and more.

I love her cheese boards - they are empty wine bottles melted in a kiln, and each piece is a unique shape and colour. And the best part is, she has to empty each bottle!

Gill runs workshops and makes beautiful one-off pieces for custom orders.

She will be at the Ivanhoe Makers Market this week - Saturday October 17th 10.00am - 4.00pm

The Kelti Project

As well as making beautiful jewellery from gemstones and 18 carat gold, stallholder Shirley Barker also sells adorable toys.

I absolutey love the retro lounge suite, with matching old school tv!

The shower door really opens, and the toilet lid lifts up and down - who wouldn't want these in their dollhouse? I want them in my real house.

These wooden toys are handmade by a gentleman in Mooroolbark, and all money raised goes to support the Kelti Project, a charity that has two centres in India; in Bhiwadi, Rajasthan and Jehangirpuri, Delhi.

The Kelti Project began 10 years ago, and funds are used to enable underpriviledged women to learn work skills, improving the quality of their families' lives. The Project is open to all religions and is managed in India by the Sisters of the Destitute and priests of the Jesuit Order.

The Bhiwadi centre focuses mainly on tailoring and embroidery, with classes in basic literacy art, dance and music. The centre in Jehangirpuri also runs classes in hairdressing and computer skills. Both centres offer free childcare, to enable wpomen to attend classes.

It's only 116 until Christmas, and I'm sure this helicopter would look pretty spiffy in a lucky someone's Christmas stocking.

IVANHOE MAKERS MARKET - CREATED BY HAND

In order to broaden our horizons, we are in the process of changing the name and look of the 9" x 5" Quality Makers Market.

Over the next few months, we will have a new name, and a spiffy new logo on our banners and postcards.

So, what's in a name...

The name 9" x 5" Quality Makers Market was originally chosen to represent the history of Banyule, in particular the artists of the Heidelberg School. The Market is now approaching its 2nd birthday, and the wide variety of high quality work produced by our stallholders is not adequately reflected in the name.

We think that "Ivanhoe Makers Market" better reflects what we actually do. All stallholders create the beautiful works of art and craft available for purchase - pieces are not outsourced to China or Vietnam, they are all made here in Melbourne by our amazingly talented "North of the Yarra" artisans.

In the meantime, it's onwards and upwards - our next market is on Saturday June 20th, 10.00am - 4.00pm.

Ivanhoe Makers Market is held inside the Banyule Arts Space- perfect on a cold Winter's day. Don't forget to check out the original Art deco toilet doors - when you see them, you'll be amazed!!

Banyule Arts Space is located at 14 Ivanhoe Parade, Ivanhoe. It's 25 metres from Upper Heidelberg Road, and is 200 metres from Ivanhoe Railway Station.

The stunning work featured this month is by jeweller Di Bloomfield. Di makes handcrafted lampwork glass beads, which she then turns into one-off bracelets, necklaces, bookmarks, key rings and more.
I'm in love with the red and white spotty bracelet (sigh)

Di is a new stallholder at Ivanhoe Makers Market - Created by Hand, and we welcome her to the show, and look forward to seeing what new creations she has each month.

The 9" X 5" Quality Maker's Market is on again Saturday April18th, from 10.00am - 4.00pm at Banyule Arts Space. We have over 20 stallholders, with absolutely beautiful handmade wares that you won't find anywhere else in Melbourne.

There is plenty of free parking, and Banyule Arts Space is 5 minutes from trains (Ivanhoe Station) and buses. We are situated at 14 Ivanhoe Parade, Ivanhoe - very handy to some of the best coffee and yummiest cakes in Melbourne.

Stuck for a Winter project? Why not purchase some hand-spun and dyed wool, from textile artist Teresa Bennet? Perfect for knitting nice warm mittens and scarves! If you're new to knitting (or just need a few tips), pop by Teresa's stall and have a chat. You'll definitely be inspired.

Twilight Christmas Market

Don't waste precious time and petrol running all over town looking for that perfect gift!

Everything you need, from more-ish fudge to adorable children's wear will be available at the 9" X 5" Quality Makers Market's extra-special Twilight Christmas Fair, on Friday December 5th.

The Market will run from 5.00pm - 8.00pm, and features a very special musical performance by students from Accent Music and Language Centre. We will also be having a free bbq in the park.

As always, the amazingly talented "North of the Yarra" artists will be presenting a huge variety of handmade one-of-a-kind gifts for everyone on your list.

The final Makers Market for 2008 will be held on Sunday December 14th, from 10.00am - 4.00pm.

BREAKING NEWS....

We will be taking a short break in January, and the 9" X 5" Quality Makers Market will be back bigger than ever, on a new day for 2009.

The Makers Market in 2009 will be on 3rd Saturday of the month (INSTEAD OF 3rd Sunday). We will kick off the year on Saturday February 21st, at the Banyule Arts Space, 14 Ivanhoe Parade, Ivanhoe.

Redeeming the ruin...the art of consumption

Our next market will be held in conjunction with this very interesting exhibition. You'll get two for one!

The exhibition is also the work of Banyule City Council and is running from the 22nd October to the 29th November. The exhibition is open at the Banyule Arts Space from Wednesday to Saturday from 11am to 4pm with special Sunday openings on the 26th October at 3.30pm and of course from 11am to 4pm on the 9th November, our market day.

Children's workshops this Sunday

In anticipation of Children's Week, we are having some activities for children at this months market.

Shirley Barker will be running Jewellery workshops through the day for children 6-12 years. Classes will be at 10.30, 12.30 and 2.30. To secure a place call Shirley on 0409 806 631 or just arrive on the day.

Teresa Bennett will be teaching spinning on a stick all through the day. Just arrive and ask!

Kids fun at the Makers Market

Our wonderful jeweller Shirley teaches Ava to make a necklace.
This Sunday October 12 Shirley will be running kids jewellery workshops; we have a demonstration of Japanese braiding by the Melbourne Kumo Himo Society; a musical performance by Accent Music School Trio, as well as our fantastic market buskers Sam and Luke.

We welcome new stallholders this week:look out for Ricardo and his spectacular woodturning, Threadneedles and Bloom, who make the prettiest silk ribbon wedding accessories and bookmarks we've seen in a long time, and Artopia, makers of original glassworks.

Growing up in Brisbane with three talented sisters, an artist Mother and mechanically minded Father, I began my working life in advertising, and my love for all things ’visually creative’ grew from there.

Having worked with many of the artistic mediums, I finally found my niche in ceramics and Mud Pies Handpainted Ceramics was born. This became my creative outlet for 14 years. The painting of tile murals then led me to painting ‘whimsical’ walls and panoramas in local schools and private homes. Yearning for a new form of self expression, my sister introduced me to lampworking (the making of glass beads using a torch and rods of glass) in 2005. From that day on I have been consumed with passion for glass.

I now work full time from my home-based studio in Melbourne. Even though I have been involved in art & design for most of my working life, having the ability to turn a stick of glass into a beautiful, mesmerizing, wearable object is a magical experience that just grows with each day spent at the flame.. My love of roses and hearts feature strongly in my designs, this is perhaps a reflection of the way I feel about this totally absorbing art form.

After being invited to study Design and Technology jewellery at Box Hill Senior Secondary College during VCE, I then studied at Northern Metropolitan Institute of TAFE. After graduating I curated the Diploma of Arts – Product Design Jewellery graduate exhibition at Synergy Gallery and also won the Koodaks Product Design Award.

I have studied Small Business Management and am now in the second year of running my own business.

My work reflects the simplicity of basic design elements; line and form. The clean textures and flowing surfaces relate to the tools I use and my working environment. I enjoy the problem solving process of taking an idea and creating a physical piece. I plan to teach jewellery in the future, to pass on the skills and knowledge others have given me.

Birthday cake on a rainy day

Our birthday celebrations went off very well with this beautiful cake, with Jenny Mulholland, our very supportive local councillor, making a lovely little speech and cutting our cake. Champagne was duly poured and drank.

Thankyou to all the stallholders who attended. Our market is a very friendly place to be. Thankyou to all the people who came out, braving the cold and the rain. We hope you enjoyed the market.

On the Tiles Craft is the concept of Jan Kerr and is based in Eltham.

Jan has a professional background in Kindergarten teaching and community development with local government.The home based business began in 1996, became full-time after two years and expanded as demand and studio space grew.The finished work is exhibited and sold through maker's markets and country galleries.

Pre-fired standard tiles in various sizes are used to make feature tiles, trivets, framed tiles, coasters, fridge magnets, pendants and brooches. Tablemat and coaster sets, trays, crosses, mirrors and plaques are made using wood. Personalised items, such as name brooches, house number tiles, boxes, clocks and albums are made on application.The work involves the application of handpainted images from decoupage papers and acrylic paint to the tiles and wooden items, then finished with epoxy resin to give a hardened, heatproof surface. The designs are stylish and contemporary to trends, creating a wide range of product, themes and tonings. On the Tiles aspires to high quality work with attention to customer needs, without compromising the enjoyment of the creative process and the handcrafted technique. Each item is created individually and most designs are unique to On the Tiles style.

I have been making and selling jewellery for many years. I completed a number of Silver Smithing courses some years ago and now combine gemstones into my creations. All of my pieces are one off designs and many of the gemstones in my jewellery I have collected on my trips to India . I collect all manner of beads, some precious, some semi precious, some bric a brac, and some modern manufactured beads. I like my necklaces to be graduated and always integrated within some aesthetic. I mix colours, textures and brilliance chosen on the basis of what is at hand.

I work primarily with gemstones and am fascinated by the history gemstones and the millions of years of combined workings of the elements that caresses and shapes them into works of art in their own right. I enjoy so much creating jewellery and sharing this with the people who purchase my pieces.

My textile practice has been developed from a keen interest in knitting with further studies, to viewing textiles as a sculptural art form. In my final year at college, all my worked developed into on-off wall-hangings and sculpture. My end of year exhibition was very successful and encouraged me to further extend myself in this direction, culminating in winning the 2005 Old England Outdoor Sculpture Award with my piece ‘Woven Memories’, which hung in the Remembrance Garden at the Repatriation hospital.

I continue to explore the 3 dimensional through unique one-off scarves, wall-hanging and sculpture. Each adds to my knowledge of form, explores all sorts of materials, including recycled, nature and collected materials.

I want to show textiles in a non-traditional way, highlighting both skills and aesthetics. I want to create forms that make people look at things differently. My work cannot be done by machine as it develops its own life as it is created, show-casing the unique and beautiful nature of the hand-made.

9" x 5″ Quality Makers Market promotes the work of local crafted artists and designers, displaying unique handmade quality wares available for purchase. The market also aims to offer an outlet ‘North of the Yarra' for local artists; an arts incubator for new ideas; cultural opportunities for the community and promotion of the arts and cultural heritage of Heidelberg and surrounds.

We hope to keep you uptodate with what's happening at the market, profiling our wonderfully talented artists, and any special events.
